Getting started

When should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first checkup by age 7. Most kids won’t need treatment yet, but an early look lets us spot crossbites, crowding or jaw-growth issues while they’re easiest to guide. Our Rising Star program makes these checkups free.

Am I too old for braces or aligners?

Not at all. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, and adults are one of our fastest-growing groups of patients. Many choose Invisalign® or ceramic braces for a more discreet look.

Do I need a referral from my dentist?

No. You can book a free consultation directly. With your permission, we’ll keep your dentist updated so your care stays coordinated.

What happens at the first consultation?

In about 60 minutes you’ll get a free exam, digital X-rays and a 3D scan, see a preview of your new smile and leave with a written plan and price. See your first visit step by step.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Most comprehensive cases take 12 to 24 months. Minor corrections with Smile Express often take about 4 to 6 months. Your orthodontist will give you a personalized estimate at your consultation.

Should I keep seeing my regular dentist during treatment?

Yes. Keep up your cleanings and checkups every six months. Healthy gums and clean teeth help your treatment stay on schedule.

Braces

Do braces hurt?

Getting braces on doesn’t hurt. It’s normal to feel pressure and some soreness for 3 to 5 days after they’re placed and after some adjustments. Soft foods, orthodontic wax and over-the-counter pain relievers help a lot.

How often are adjustment appointments?

Usually every 6 to 10 weeks. Most visits take 20 to 30 minutes, and with Orthivaro Anywhere some check-ins can happen from home.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Skip hard, sticky and chewy foods like popcorn, hard candy, caramel, nuts, ice and gum. Cut crunchy foods such as apples and carrots into small pieces. You’ll get a full list and a care kit on day one.

Metal or ceramic braces — what’s the difference?

Both move teeth the same way. Metal braces are the most durable and let you pick fun colors; ceramic braces are tooth-colored and blend in. Your orthodontist will help you choose based on your bite and lifestyle.

What if a bracket breaks or a wire pokes?

Don’t worry — it happens. Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax, save any loose pieces and call your clinic or send a message in the app. Most fixes take just a few minutes.

Can I play sports or a wind instrument with braces?

Absolutely. Wear a mouthguard for contact sports — we can recommend one designed for braces. Musicians usually adjust within a week or two.

Aligners & Smile Express

How many hours a day do I need to wear aligners?

20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink anything other than plain water, and brush. Consistent wear is the biggest factor in finishing on time.

What’s the difference between Invisalign® and Smile Express?

Invisalign® is comprehensive treatment for simple to complex cases, with regular in-office visits. Smile Express is a faster option for minor crowding or spacing — typically about 4 to 6 months, with most check-ins done at home through Orthivaro Anywhere.

Are aligners as effective as braces?

For most cases, yes — when an orthodontist plans and monitors them. Some complex bite or rotation problems still respond better to braces, and we’ll tell you honestly which option fits your case.

How is this different from mail-order aligners?

Every Orthivaro aligner plan starts with an in-person exam and X-rays and is designed and monitored by a licensed orthodontist, with in-person care whenever you need it. Mail-order kits skip that exam and supervision, which raises the risk of problems.

How often do I switch to a new set of aligners?

Usually every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your plan. The Orthivaro Anywhere app reminds you when it’s time to switch.

Will aligners affect how I talk?

You may notice a slight lisp for the first few days. Most people adapt quickly as their tongue gets used to the trays.

Kids & Rising Star

What is the Rising Star program?

Rising Star is our free growth-monitoring program for kids 7 and up. We check your child’s bite and jaw development periodically until the ideal time to begin treatment — if they need it at all.

Are Rising Star checkups really free?

Yes. Growth checkups are free while your child is in Rising Star. You only pay if you decide to begin treatment.

What is Phase I (early) treatment?

Some children benefit from a short first phase, usually between ages 7 and 10, to correct issues like crossbites, severe crowding or habits such as thumb-sucking. Most kids don’t need it — we recommend it only when waiting would make treatment harder.

At what age do most kids get braces?

Typically between 9 and 14, once most permanent teeth have come in. Every child is different, which is why early monitoring helps us choose the best timing.

Do you offer clear aligners for teens?

Yes. Many teens are great candidates for Invisalign® aligners. We’ll help you decide whether your teen is ready for the responsibility of wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day.

Cost & insurance

How much do braces or aligners cost?

Every case is different, so we give you an exact, all-in price at your free consultation. With insurance and our 0% in-house plans, monthly payments start at $99, with $0 down options.

Does insurance cover orthodontics?

Many dental plans include an orthodontic benefit, usually a lifetime maximum per person. We verify your coverage for free and file all claims for you. Learn how ortho insurance works.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes. Orthodontic treatment is a qualified medical expense, so you can use your HSA or FSA card for your down payment, monthly payments or paying in full.

Do your payment plans charge interest?

No. Our in-house monthly plans are 0% interest. If you prefer a longer term, third-party financing is available, subject to credit approval.

Are retainers included in my treatment fee?

Your first set of retainers is included with comprehensive treatment. Replacement or backup retainers are available anytime — ask your clinic about retainer options.

How do I pay my bill?

Pay in the Orthivaro Anywhere app, by phone at (214) 555-0147 or at your clinic. See all payment options.
