Many parents are surprised to hear that the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends a first orthodontic checkup by age 7. At that age, your child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth — which is exactly what makes it the right moment to look ahead.
What we look for at an early visit
By age 7 the first permanent molars and incisors have usually arrived. That lets an orthodontist evaluate how the jaws are growing and spot issues that are easier to guide now than to correct later:
- Crossbites, where upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth
- Severe crowding or spacing
- Protruding front teeth that are prone to injury
- Habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting
- Jaw growth that is out of balance
An early visit is about timing, not about rushing into treatment.
Does an early visit mean early braces?
Usually not. Most children who come to our Rising Star program simply get periodic, free growth checkups until the ideal time to begin — often after all permanent teeth have erupted. When early (Phase 1) treatment is recommended, it is typically short and can make later treatment simpler.
How to prepare
There’s nothing special to do. Bring your child’s insurance card and any recent dental X-rays if you have them. The visit is relaxed, takes about 45 minutes and includes a gentle exam, digital X-rays and a 3D scan — no needles, no drills.
