Congratulations — your braces or aligners are done! Now comes the part that protects your investment: your retainer. Teeth naturally try to drift back toward their old positions, especially in the first year.

Wear it as prescribed

Most patients wear their retainer full-time for the first few months, then switch to nights only. Your orthodontist will give you a schedule — and “nights for life” is the simplest rule to remember.

Clean it every day

  • Rinse it with cool water every time you take it out.
  • Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild, unscented soap — not toothpaste, which can scratch.
  • Soak it once a week in a retainer cleaner.
  • Never use hot water; it can warp the plastic.

Keep it safe

Most lost retainers end up wrapped in a napkin on a lunch tray. Always use the case, keep it away from pets (dogs love them!) and never leave it in a hot car.

A retainer is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy for your smile.

If it feels tight or breaks

A little tightness means it’s doing its job. If it no longer fits, cracks or gets lost, call your clinic right away — we can scan and replace it quickly, often without an in-person visit.
